So today things seem to be quiet different. netmeter only "works" with all my adapters disabled, enabling any adapter makes netmeter think there are no interfaces available. I say works in quotes because, obviously, with no adapters enabled there is nothing to actually monitor.

One thing is for sure, in my case, this is clearly somehow related to disabled network adapters. Although I can't figure out how.

I shall make a note of the phase of the moon and try this again next month.

Guys, I've had this problem since I started using vista too, probably around 6 months ago. I've tried everything, reinstalling, wiping out files, different versions, etc... Today, after revisiting this issue, reading this thread prompted me to go through my network connections and I've FINALLY figured out what is causing the problem. Apparently I had a "Network Cable Unplugged" on one of my LAN connections (in Control Panel -> Network Connections). If I disable that connection netmeter reports all interfaces! If it's enabled (and "Cable Unplugged") netmeter has trouble enumerating interfaces and reports the standard All and Dial up. I could reproduce the issue every time.

Whew... Finally I know how to fix this issue and continue using my favorite network monitor Smiley

FYI, the troublesome network connection was the "Bluetooth LAN Access Server Driver". Although I'm not sure that it was to blame, it could be the fact that it was the only "Network Cable Unplugged" connection in the list.

That's it!  I did the same and saw my Ethernet was unplugged, so I disabled it and everything worked properly.  I only use Ethernet at work!  So the problem was indeed Netmeter!

I'm psyched because I too love this software!

Update:  March 27th - I thought I had it but it seems to be not working again.  Very intermittent.  Today, I have only my wireless adapter enabled, but  get a consistent DL: .4 Kbps / UL: 5.9Kbps - steady and solid despite significant fluctuations in network demand.

Sadly, this software is just not working.

Yes, disabling the ethernet ports worked for me too.  Netmeter is now running again... thanks!

I'm back in the same boat with y'all again.

Windows Vista Ultimate
Netmeter worked fine initially, then it started saying "Nothing to Monitor" (not seeing any adaptors).  I solved it somehow a few months ago - which included switching to 1.1.3, although that didn't fix it.

I noticed after getting it working again that when set to monitor all adaptors (which was a list of about 30+ in the selection dialogue box with many duplicates of effectively the same device), the CPU usage was >20%.  When I selected one sepcific adaptor, the CPU usage dropped to practically zero.

About a week ago, pre-SP1 update but following a OS crash when Netmeter reported it's files had been trashed and needed to re-create them, it stopped working.

The most anoying thing now is that I can't remember how I got it working again last time this happened.

Since I've had it working/broken and working again once, and this time it was working then broke without any system config changes (except for anything else which messed up in the OS crash), it must be possible to get it working again - and so far, this is the nicest, unobtrustive and effective network traffic monitor I've used so I'm going to keep fighting to get it working again...

(...although, I had noticed that on occation, some processes could access the Internet and both u/l and d/l data without a blip in the meter - but it was rare and I haven't found a pattern to that yet...)

Hello,

I've had a similar problem: Running Vista Biz SP1 on a Dell laptop with NetMeter fine, but at some point, for no apparent reason, NetMeter no longer detects anything to monitor.

Having read this thread, the following solution worked: In 'Manage network connections' I set all connections to 'disabled' - except ethernet (which I use to connect) - My wireless was on 'not connected' with the manual switch in the 'off' position. Netmeter registered a brief, huge surge in activity and then was able to detect ALL possible connections again.

No idea why this worked but thought I'd report it. A great piece of software by the way.

 Smiley

Hi Folks,  I had been running on Vista SP1 RC where Netmeter did not work.  Downloaded the final SP1 and wallah!  Netmeter's working again.  Great Day!  I am happy.

Hey.. it seems we have some lucky guys here..
On my pc neither deactivating all network interfaces nor installing the sp1 made netmeter work again. :-(

i've been having problems with netmeter for the past week or so (ever since re-installing bluetooth drivers)

for me, disabling all unused connections works... (i.e. bluetooth, [additional ethernet if you have 2 like me] otherwise NetMeter doesn't pick up any interfaces

for those that are still having problems, install/re-install the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard, as it seems that some of microsofts updates are screwing with them (for me at least)....

currently running Vista Business 32bit (SP1)

but it's good software  Grin

Uninstalling the Cisco VPN client fixed this issue for me - now I have all interfaces on the list.

I have the same problem too. From last year I use netmeter it have no problem although I use DSL modem, dial up modem, cdma modem and gsm modem. But a few days ago my netmeter show no upload and download speed. I have uninstal it and reinstal it. It doesn't affect. I also try the new netmeter from readerror (netmeter 1.1.3) but it also so no download and upload speed. How to overcome my problem? Or readerror want to make the new software that can overcome all problem? Or is there any other software that can show download and upload like netmeter, what is the name of the freeware program and in what link I can download it?

hi guys,

read the whole topic 'cause the same thing happened to me as well.

after looking at some of your replies, i realized that my NM stopped working after I installed Virtual PC.

I managed to get it working again but only after I disabled my wireless adapter. So, it looks like NM got confused after Virtual PC added some virtual adapters...weird

in summary, it works now but i had to disable my wireless adapter  Undecided

Hello again,

i finally got NetMeter to work by deinstalling all but one duplicate isatap.{.....} entries in the devicemanager under networkinterfaces. (i needed to check view->show hidden devices in order to see them).
im using vista 64bit..
maybe netmeter has a problem with duplicate networkinterfaces?

regards,

Thank oopepe. I had 8 instances of that in my computer. After deleting seven of them, NetMeter worked fine!

Hi and thanks for this info. I tried deleting these isatap.{...} entries and it worked until next restart. After that the isataps were reinstalled and Netmeter was a no-go again. So I searched a bit deeper and found that these isatap.{...} entries are part of Vista's ipv6 to ipv4 conversion. So I went to services, stopped and disabled IP Helper which is part of this ipv6->ipv4 stuff and then deleted ALL isatap.{...} entries. Now these isataps are not re-installing any more and since then my Netmeter has been running smoothly, restart or no restart, HOORAY! It seems that ipv6 support is missing/not working in Netmeter.

Hopefully this helps.
