I am in the same boat.  Sad Everything was working fine for the last few months but now there is nothing to monitor.

At the moment I get two entries in the interface list:

All Interfaces (...)
Dialup Interfaces (...)

However sometimes when I go in there it seems to list everything (like everything is okay) but when I make a selection it never persists.  ie. I pick my wifi connection and hit ok but when I go back to check the drop down is showing a blank selection.  Maybe it selects okay but renders wrongly on the GUI?  Or maybe it's just stored a bad index?

Anyway in terms of cause, I suspect that this all stems from some trouble I was having with my home wifi connection this morning.  I dunno what was wrong but it wouldn't connect.  So I I uninstalled my network adapter via Device Manager and after windows re-detected it and re-installed it everything was okay again.  However since then of course the netmeter has been broken.

I've tried a few things since but no luck.  I've reinstalled many times (with and without UAC - i'm on vista home premium) and made sure I clear out all files in C:\Program~1\NetMeter\ and C:\Users\Paul\AppData\Roaming\NetMeter.

One other thing ... I did notice that when I reinstall the network adapter that I get a blip of traffic on the netmeter graph - and in some cases the sampled values seem to stick as it reports the same values for every graph update.  And so I end up with an ever growing coloured rectangle on the graph and the stats going up with a steady increment..  Looks like a bug to me whereby the values are being reused rather than resampled...

Please look into a fix because this is a great tool and I would be sad to be without it!!

Screenshots to illustrate the behaviour that I just described.

two only.jpg = as I said sometimes I only see 2 interfaces...

full list.jpg = at other times I can see everything.

blank selection with dropdown.jpg = if I choose anything from the full list other than "All Interfaces" or "Dial-Up Interfaces" then when I go back to check the default selection is blank.

blank selection.jpg = the default blank selection.

Is there some way I can easily reset / reinstall all of my network interfaces?  Maybe something has gone wrong with the repository where this information is stored?

I too am getting the "nothing to monitor" popup and a dropdown that doesn't list my network adapter.  Everything was working beautifully for a month or so, but then a couple weeks ago it stopped working.

I, like most everyone else on this thread, am using Vista (Ultimate for me).

I *thought* maybe it had something to do with Internet Download Manager, but I uninstalled and no change.  (I know that IDM can mess with protocols)

any help?
btw - I LOVE netmeter when it works.

I have a similar problem and as a result I studied the previous advise and ensured that I have tried all of it before asking.
I've tried 3 alternative "Network interfaces to monitor", which I regarded as relevant and all of them only records the UL trafic...no Dounload though.
I'm using a HUAWEI Mobile connect 3G modem(USB, Vista Business), which I have noticed is being presented within Windows Explorer as a "CD drive".
May this "misrepresentation" be an indication why Netmeter does not detect the relevant traffic? Any other ideas maybe? Huh

I'm having the same problem. I'm running Vista Enterprise with SP1 RC.
My problem started after installing Comodo firewall 3.0.14.276.
At work I have installed the same version of the Comodo firewall on Vista without the SP1 and NetMeter is working fine. I do not know if the problem is related to the SP1, the firewall or different hardware.

I do not have the time at the moment to do some troubleshooting, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

Update:
My problem was hardware related. I have an extra network card in my computer (a Intel 21143/2 based 10/100 mbps Ethernet Controller). NetMeter works again after disabling this card.

Hi All,

Add me to the Vista users that get no monitoring.  Worked fine until about November, then quit.  Thought perhaps Vista SP1 (RC1) might fix it, buy no joy.  Have tried all of the fixes listed above with the same results.  Using Dell 1330 laptop, Vista Home Pro, with Intel Pro Wireless 3945ABG adapter.  Windows shows all adapters including Hamachi software adapter (which also used to show up in the list and was properly monitored).  I have a feeling that a Microsoft Update in Late October or early November is what caused the problem.   I have no way to reconstruct that now, however, with RC1 installed.

It is a great program, ReadError,.  Hope this info helps.

Yup, as M@rlon said the problem is indeed Comodo. I unistalled it and now netmeter works fine.  Now to figure out why Comodo isn't working right...

"Nothing to monitor" hit me too in my Vista laptop (Packard Bell Easynote) a couple of days ago.

I was testing Zadacom 3G+ connected to USB port when this hit the first time. Even though the drivers for the modem have been installed and I have used the modem already earlier, so there might not be anything to do with this.

First I thought it is only the USB I cannot monitor, but now it cannot handle the wireless either. My wireless adapter is
Atheros AR5006EG and with this NetMeter has worked OK for months now.

I have no firewall software installed in the PC and I have also tried totally disabling the Vista Firewall, so it cannot be firewall related in my case.

This is really a big pitty because I have used Netmeter practically many times a day while I am working a lot with wireless techniques. (I am even advertizing NetMeter in my hobby http://speedtest.fi site.) It is an excellent software, so hopefully I get it back very soon.

One addition: I have tried un-installing and re-installing NM but this did not solve the problem.

Is there some files to be deleted manually after uninstalling that might help?

Hi ReadError,

I have been using Netmeter 0.99 Beta 2 on Vista Ultimate since Vista went RTM with ni problems whatsoever. Yesterday I upgraded to Vista SP1 RTM (MSDN download version) and now NetMeter complains there are no interfaces to monitor. I just upgraded to 1.1.3 but I have the same issue with that. Looks like something has changed in SP1 and i wanted to give you a heads up before it is launched officially in March.

Cheers,
Garry

Guys, I've had this problem since I started using vista too, probably around 6 months ago. I've tried everything, reinstalling, wiping out files, different versions, etc... Today, after revisiting this issue, reading this thread prompted me to go through my network connections and I've FINALLY figured out what is causing the problem. Apparently I had a "Network Cable Unplugged" on one of my LAN connections (in Control Panel -> Network Connections). If I disable that connection netmeter reports all interfaces! If it's enabled (and "Cable Unplugged") netmeter has trouble enumerating interfaces and reports the standard All and Dial up. I could reproduce the issue every time.

Whew... Finally I know how to fix this issue and continue using my favorite network monitor Smiley

FYI, the troublesome network connection was the "Bluetooth LAN Access Server Driver". Although I'm not sure that it was to blame, it could be the fact that it was the only "Network Cable Unplugged" connection in the list.

The plot thickens...

So it looks like that particular connection was not to blame. It's starting to look like enabling certain LAN connections confuses netmeter. Also, I've noticed that I have to wait ~15 seconds after I disable all but one of the connection for netmeter to come back to life.

My Connections:
  • Hamachi Network Interface
  • Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC
  • Bluetooth LAN Access Server Driver
  • VMWare Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet1
  • VMWare Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet8

Netmeter Works (reproducible):
  • Hamachi Network Interface - Disabled
  • Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC - Enabled
  • Bluetooth LAN Access Server Driver - Disabled
  • VMWare Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet1 - Disabled
  • VMWare Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet8 - Disabled

Enabling certain connections breaks netmeter. But not right away, ~15 to 30 seconds after the connection is enabled, perhaps until it acquires an address? The same delay applies after disabling a connections before netmeter comes back to life.

The strange this is this:

Netmeter Works (reproducible):
  • Hamachi Network Interface - Disabled
  • Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC - Enabled
  • Bluetooth LAN Access Server Driver - Disabled
  • VMWare Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet1 - Enabled
  • VMWare Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet8 - Disabled

Netmeter Works (reproducible):
  • Hamachi Network Interface - Disabled
  • Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC - Enabled
  • Bluetooth LAN Access Server Driver - Disabled
  • VMWare Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet1 - Disabled
  • VMWare Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet8 - Enabled

Netmeter Doesn't Work (reproducible):
  • Hamachi Network Interface - Disabled
  • Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC - Enabled
  • Bluetooth LAN Access Server Driver - Disabled
  • VMWare Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet1 - Enabled
  • VMWare Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet8 - Enabled

And also:

Netmeter Doesn't Work (reproducible):
  • Hamachi Network Interface - Enabled
  • Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC - Enabled
  • Bluetooth LAN Access Server Driver - Disabled
  • VMWare Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet1 - Disabled
  • VMWare Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet8 - Disabled

I don't know for how long it will keep working with these settings but enabling any other connection breaks netmeter, and by breaks I mean no interfaces reported (aside from All and Dial up) and no monitoring takes place.

alexpi, I also deactivated and reactivated my 3 adapters:  Hamachi, Broadcom Netlink and Intel Pro Wireless 3945A one at a time.  No joy with restoring Netmeter to monitoring status.
