Hi all,

Since a certain number of you are having problems with NetMeter on Vista (no monitoring, etc.), i decided to resume work on NetMeter.
Problematic for me is, that i can't recreate the bug on my system (Vista Ultimate x64).
So if you want to help me fix the problem, please download the new beta build an post your results here.

http://www.metal-machine.de/readerror/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=get18

Screenshots of the network adapter listing in the options screen would be nice.

Thank you!  Smiley

Update:

I did some more changes to the beta and uploaded a new version.
Please note, that this version doesn't have an installer (the installer will be back for the final release)

Update 2:

Another new release addressing the access violation and broken autostart feature. Please let me know if it works!

Update 3:

Yet another release addressing the "no monitoring" problem. I'm starting to run out of ideas now...
None of my own machines shows this problem - no matter if i'm using Vista64 or Windows 7 Beta, real or virtual. By the way: The machine i'm developing on, has 3 ISATAP devices. It also has no effect, if i enable or disable certain adapters. If i could only reproduce this problem...  Huh

Is there any other changes, not related to that problem in this build? I am using XP, can I be helpful?

I installed netmeter on the beta of Windows 7 and it would not monitor. I'll try your new version and report back.

Thanks for your efforts... love the product.

Hi RE,

Good to see you resuming work on NM. You had said previously that you are thinking of making the source public. Any final thoughts yet?

Thanks for the new Beta.

I really miss my NetMeter functionality.  Unfortunately when I try to run the Beta I get a Range Check Error box with OK button.  After pressing the button nothing further happens.  (The program remains in memory though.)

I ran your new beta version on Windows 7.
  1. It did not install, it just ran.
  2. It seems to be working as advertised.
  3. I pinned it to the Start Menu since it didn't install and appear there automatically.
  4. I'm really happy to have it back. None of the gadgets in Windows 7 are as nice for monitoring network traffic.

Thanks so much. I hope you'll announce the final release.

Thanks for taking this on.  I was at a loss to replace NM with anything half as good.  Will be following results and will install on Vista SP1 and provide what data I can.

Good luck and Great Day,

This is great news!
v1.1.4b2 works almost perfect on Windows 7, one thing that doesn't work properly is the "Load on windows startup" option. Once checked and settings saved, NM will start with windows just fine, however when you open the settings again the checkbox is unchecked. This means no way to disable NM from starting with windows anymore...

Here are some screenshots from v1.1.3 and v1.1.4b2 to compare:

I too get an error when trying to run the downloaded file:

Code:
Access violation at address 00405012 in module
'NetMeter114beta_2.exe'. Read of address 002D00eB.

Running Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit
Kaspersky Av
Spybot S&D
Spyware Blaster
Windows Defender

As others have reported, the program remains running in memory.  The problem persists if I uncompress the .exe with UPX, and if I disable Kaspersky.

 Grin

Just installed Beta 1.1.4 on Vista SP1 and it is working fine.  Also working on XP SP2, where it always did.  Will watch for anomalies.  Do you want the interface list??

Thanks,

Fred

Thanks for your help so far!

Ok, so it seems to work for some of you but others get access violations...
I'm not quite sure why, but i'm looking into it.

@patti70: You pushed my onto something interesting. Vista introduced some new API-functions for IPv6 interface management i wasn't aware of until now. I'll have to do some research to make use of them.

The autorun feature seems to be broken in this build of NetMeter - i will fix it for the next release.

As for making NetMeter open source: I'm still holding on to that idea, but first i need to make some more cleanup, add more comments, and so on. Also i need to decide which open source license i will go for.

Hello!

First, thank You ReadError for such a great application! Smiley
No 1 must have if you are using GPRS/EDGE/UMTS based Internet connection with data transfer limits like me..

The newest 1.1.4 b2 seems working without problems at my Vista x64. Until this version I was not able to run NetMeter properly at x64 Vista at all.. Earlier version was showing some outgoing traffic, but it was not true.
Here you can see my screenshot with interfaces list..

Sorry for my English Smiley
